Formation

The rock band Phish was formed by the singer and guitarist Trey Anastasio, drummer Jon Fishman and guitarist Jeff Holdsworth in 1983. The three were studying at the University of Vermont at the time. As they began their small jam sessions in the dormitory, they initiated their search for a bassist. Soon Mike Gordon joined the trio and the now four-piece ensemble began to hold small scale off-campus music shows. During their performances they were often joined by the talented percussionist Marc Daubert, keyboardist Page McConnell and a singer known by the name, The Dude of Life. After completing graduation, Holdsworth parted ways with the band. Today the lineup of Phish comprises Trey Anastasio, Jon Fishman, Mike Gordon and Page McConnell.

Debut

Phish came up with their debut studio album titled ‘Junta’ in 1988. The collection featured some great compositions by Anastasio such as ‘Fluffhead,’ ‘David Bowie’ and ‘Divided Sky.’ The following year they embarked on a tour, making stops at several venues to make music fans familiar with their distinct style of performances. Each concert by the rock stars had a fresh appeal as they made it a point to refrain from playing previously created arrangements. In 1997, ‘Junta’ was certified Gold by the RIAA and eventually declared Platinum by 2004.

Highlights

Phish recorded the album ‘Lawn Boy’ in 1989 and released it the following year.  Towards the beginning of 1991, the musicians embarked on a nationwide tour during which they recorded sessions with their old singer friend, The Dude of Life. In February of 1992, Phish released the album ‘A Picture of Nectar’ under the renowned label, Elektra Records. The songs explored a wide range of music genres including jazz, rock ‘n’ roll, neo-psychedelia, calypso and country. In the following years the rockers produced a string of hit albums such as ‘Rift,’ ‘Hoist,’ ‘Billy Breathes,’ ‘Farmhouse,’ ‘Round Room’ and ‘Joy.’

The Ever-Evolving Originals

The ever-increasing popularity of Phish is credited to their live concerts. They constantly strive to be innovative and experiment with various instruments arrangements. Since the band is known for putting together a new style of performance with even their old music numbers, fans can expect another string of unpredictably fascinating shows at the Madison Square Garden this December.
