The Beginning

Charlie Wilson joined the popular funk and R&B group, The Gap Band as their lead vocalist in 1973. Soon after his addition, the ensemble’s career started to gain momentum. They began performing at local clubs in Tulsa. At one such gig, the group caught the attention of the country rock singer, Leon Russell who invited them to his studio. Subsequently they were hired as Russell’s backup band. Over the following years, the musicians toured along Russell and also had the opportunity to work with Willie Nelson, the renowned country artist.  Some of the most popular songs by The Gap Band include ‘Burn Rubber on Me,’ ‘Yearning for Your Love’ and ‘You Dropped a Bomb on Me.’

Solo Venture

Charlie Wilson’s vocals led The Gap Band it to new heights. Having carved a niche in the industry over decades of hit albums and performances, Wilson eventually decided to launch his solo career. His first individual album ‘Bridging the Gap’ was released in the year 2000. The collection produced the singer’s first ever number one Billboard Urban Adult Contemporary song ‘Without You.’

Charlie’s next record ‘Charlie, Last Name Wilson’ was released by Jive Records in 2004. Its title song became a big hit and the album went on to be certified Gold. Since then, the musician has consistently topped the Billboard Urban Adult Contemporary Singles chart. His CD ‘Uncle Charlie’ earned him two Grammy nominations; one in the category of Best R&B Album and the other in Best R&B Vocal Performance Male.

One of Charlie’s biggest hit singles is ‘You Are.’ It came out in 2012 and remained at the top of the Billboard Urban Adult Contemporary chart for a consistent thirteen weeks. It was also nominated for two Grammy Awards.


In a career spanning over three decades, Charlie Wilson has collaborated with a number of prominent artists of the industry. He made an appearance along R. Kelly to perform the track ‘Mi Casa’ on ‘The Biggie Duets.’ He worked on Snoop Dogg’s record ‘The Doggfather.’ The collection featured Wilson’s vocals on a total of four songs namely ‘Snoop Bounce,’ Snoop’s Upside Ya Head,’ ‘Groupie’ and the title track. Recently he has made an appearance in Kanye West’s song ‘Bound 2.’

The Present

Charlie Wilson released his sixth album titled ‘Love, Charlie’ under RCA Records in January of 2013. The record has already sold 156,000 copies in the US alone. The number ‘If I Believe’ has been nominated for a Grammy in the category of ‘Best Gospel Song’. The musician’s live performances are known to attract crowds in large numbers. As he embarks on his latest tour in December, 2013, fans of R&B, hip hop and funk music are in for a treat.
