El-P & Killer Mike

Year of formation:

Run the Jewels

Jaime Meline, famously known as El-P, is an incredible artist who has pushed the boundaries of hip hop music to new heights. The Brooklyn based entrepreneur was formerly a member of Company Flow, an underground hip hop group that was signed to Rawkus Records. Currently, he plays as a member of the hip hop group, The Weathermen and the hip hop duo, Run the Jewels featuring Killer Mike.
How it started?
El-P began to show deep passion for the New York City's hip hop culture at a very young age. Meline got a chance to meet Mr. Len who performed as a DJ on his eighteenth birthday party. They developed close friendship and formed Company Flow in 1993. The group released its first single, Juvenile Techniques in 1993 and its debut EP, Funcrusher in 1996.
Following the success of the EP, the company signed a recording contract with Rawkus Records and released its first album, Funcrusher Plus in July 1997. However, after the release of the instrumental album, Little Johnny From the Hospitul: Breaks & Instrumentals Vol.1 in 1999, conflicts began to arise between the record label and the Company Flow. Hence, the group abandoned the signed deal with the Rawkus Records.
Studio Albums
Along with Amaechi Uzoigwe, El-P started his own record label, Definitive Jux, in 1999. After the group disbanded in 2001, El-P released his first solo album, Fantastic Damage through his own record label in May 2002. The album is made up of famous singles such as Deep Space 9mm and Fantastic Damage that have also been featured in the film titled Bomb the System. The album was charted at number fourteen on the U.S. Independent Albums chart and number eighty two on the Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart.

Released in March 2007 through Definitive Jux, I'll Sleep When You're Dead is El-P's second studio album that debuted at number seventy eight on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. In terms of sales, this is El-P's most successful album and sold over eleven thousand copies in the first week after its release.
In May 2012, El-P released another full length studio album, Cancer 4 Cure not on his own recording label but on the Fat Possum Records. The album landed at the fifteenth spot on Stereogum's list of top fifty albums of 2012.
