Humble Beginning

Born to be a musician, Williams performed in a variety of local shows and took part in talent competitions while growing up in Floydada, Texas. His earliest public performance records back when he was three. As a teenager, he performed with many folk and rock n roll regional bands. As part of these groups, Williams honed his singing and songwriting skills and proved his mettle. His first organized attempt was the band named The Strangers Two that he formed in early 60s.

Pozo-Seco Singers and Recognition

Williams’s talent was appreciated by the singer Susan Taylor and together with Lofton Kline she founded Pozo-Seco Singers in 1964. The trio, with their fresh music flair marked a new development in the local folk scene. Their first recorded single, Time became an instant hit and soon they were spotted by the Columbia Records. The band released their debut album in 1966 that charted at 127 on Billboard 200.

In the next year, Pozo-Seco Singers released their second album I Can Make it With You that surpassed the popularity of their previous record. Following two albums, Shades of Time and Spend Some Time With Me were released between 1968-70 and made the band an international success. In 1971, the band dissolved and Williams went on to pursue a solo career.

Emergence as the Gentle Giant

Williams’s solo music career opened new avenues of success and fame for him. Combining his skills with prior music experience, Williams launched his first album Volume 1 in 1973. The album reached at five on the Country Album chart and established him as one of the leading country icons of the time. The subsequent two records commercially outperformed and added to his reputation.

After his first number one single, I Wouldn’t Want to Live If You Didn’t Love Me, Williams emerged as a new sensation and took the nation by storm. His 1976 release, Harmony topped the Country chart and produced many hits. The next decade started with the release of his internationally popular album, I Believe in You that was certified Platinum in the US.

Later albums, Especially for You, Yellow Moon and Cafe Carolina made the 80s a successful era in his musical journey. His career slowed down in the 90s but he maintained his position among other burgeoning musicians of the time. The new century brought more opportunities and challenges along and Williams released a number of studio, compilation and live albums.
