Carly Rae Jepsen was born and bred in Mission, British Columbia. With a love of music she possessed from a young age, Carly auditioned for the fifth season of Canadian Idol and finished at third place. Getting her cue, she jumped in making music on her own and came up with an album titled Tug of War in 2008. The album was produced under the label of MapleMusic Recordings and spawned her two first hits “Tug of War” and “Bucket”. While still struggling to make it big, Carly released an extended play in 2012 which featured the single “Call Me Maybe.” This song brought Carly what she wanted – her breakthrough. Billboard Canadian Hot 100 Chart gave it no. 1 position and later she was signed to Scooter Braun's School Boy Records.

Musical Influences

According to Carly's website, her father used to sing Jepsen to sleep with James Taylor songs and the great artist became her early inspiration. While in school, Jepsen started singing at a local café in Vancouver. Opportunity came knocking at her door in 2007 when the auditions for Canadian Idol opened up. Apart from James Taylor, Jepsen's musical influences also include Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Bruce Springteen and Natalia Imbruglia. She covered Imbruglia's famous song “Torn” as a contestant in Canadian Idol.

Although Carly had given two hits from her debut album, her rise to fame came from her single “Call Me Maybe” from her EP Curiosity. The song went viral; becoming a pop-culture sensation. It was released on 604 Records. It became a number one hit not only in Canada but also in the U.S and other 19 countries. She performed the song on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and later released a recorded version of the performance on this song.
