Formation and Fame
MGMT was formed by the two university friends, Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser in 2002. The two began informal jamming with their instruments and soon developed their individual style by combining different genres of music. They graduated in 2005 and came up with their first organized effort which they titled Time to Pretend EP. With extensive touring, they developed a strong fan following and emerged as one of the most popular bands.
Tireless touring with other bands such as Of Montreal introduced MGMT’s sound to multitudes of audiences. The popularity of the band led them to sign a record deal with the Columbia Records in 2006. The deal helped in expanding their formal understanding about music and record producing. MGMT released their debut studio record, Oracular Spectacular in 2007. Soon after the release, they hit the road and played with Of Montreal, Samantha and The Courteeners in the US and abroad.
MGMT’s debut album performed well on the charts besides earning critical acclaim. Three singles from the album, Time to Pretend, Electronic Feel and Kids also made their way to international music charts and received multiple certifications in the US. Overall success of the album resulted in Gold and Platinum certification for the band in different countries around the world. 2009 proved to be a great year for MGMT as they performed with a number of other famous musicians including M.I.A, Paul McCartney, Happy Mondays and Bloc Party besides headlining major festivals. Shooting sales of MGMT tickets resulted in widespread international success of the band.
MGMT released their second full-length album, Congratulations in April 2010. The album commercially outperformed than their last record and got mostly positive reviews from the critics. The record also produced some hit singles such as Flash Delirium and Siberian Breaks. Besides the commercial prominence, band’s consistent touring continued and they performed at a number of popular platforms. In addition to their rocking performances at different events like Coachella Festival and Fun Fun Fun Fest, MGMT played at different television shows including Late Show with David Letterman, Saturday Night Live and The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.
With the start of 2012, MGMT started working for their next record. Their third and newest self-titled album was released in June 2013 and it charted in different countries. Two singles, Alien Days and Your Life Is A Lie from the album have also been released. Currently on their latest tour, MGMT is playing their concerts in various cities around the world.
