During the mid sixties, Gregg along with his brother Duane Allman played for several bands including The Units, The Allman Joys, The Escorts and The House Rockers. By 1970, the brothers had moved to Los Angeles where they were signed by Liberty Records as The Hour Glass. The band also consisted of now famed musicians Paul Hornsby, Johnny Sandlin and Pete Carr. They produced two psychedelic blues albums but due to the label’s extreme involvement, the members were not satisfied with the output. Later, both the brothers relocated to Jacksonville to form The Allman Brothers Band.
The Allman Brothers Band
The original lineup of The Allman Brothers Band included Jai Johanson and Butch Tucks on drums, Berry Oakley on bass guitar, Dickey Betts and Duane on guitars, and Gregg as the vocalist. After releasing two chart breaking albums including the eponymous debut album, the Allman Brothers produced their breakthrough album ‘At Fillmore East’. The live album reached number thirteenth spot on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified Platinum in the US. After the album’s release, the Rolling Stone Magazine hailed the group as ‘the best damn rock and roll band this country has produced in the past five years’. With hits like ‘Whipping Post’ and ‘In Memory of Elizabeth Reed’, the album is often considered as one of the best live albums ever made.
Since then, the Allman Brothers Band has gone through several highs and lows including the tragic deaths of members Duane Allman and Berry Oakley. The group disbanded and regrouped twice but continues to produce music even today. The band has released a total of eighteen studio albums and seventeen compilation albums including seven Platinum certified albums.
Gregg ventured into a solo career in 1971. Two years later he released his debut solo album ‘Laid Back’ that received critical acclaim. He continued to perform with The Allman Brothers Band while producing hit solo albums. He has produced ten studio albums including the most recent ‘Low Country Blues’. Released in 2011, the album scored a four star rating by Allmusic. It reached number one on the Top Blues Albums chart and number five on the Billboard 200. The album won the Grammy Award nomination for the ‘Best Blues Album’.
