Early Stints to Pub Piano Player
Elton was born to make music. He surprised his family by playing piano at the age of three. During his school days, he was inclined to compose different tunes. He became a part of the school choir and earned a junior scholarship for the Royal Academy of Music. At 11, Elton could easily play complex symphonies by the musicians like Bach and Chopin. Elton john started playing piano in a neighborhood pub named Northwood Hills Hotel which provided him a little living besides fulfilling his passion for playing.
Bluesology Days to Solo Debut
In 1964, Elton John formed his first organized band, Bluesology. Using his experience of composing, Elton arranged the music for many of the band’s original songs. The group also backed many American musicians including The Isley Brothers, Billy Stewart and Doris Troy. Collaborating with the emerging songwriter of the time, Bernie Taupin, Elton became the staff songwriter and composer for many musicians.
Both teamed up for the DJM Records and wrote music for the record label. Elton also contributed as the songwriter and backing vocalist for the bands like The Hollies and The Scaffold. After the breakup of Bluesology in 1968, Elton John took up a full time solo career. His first studio record, Empty Sky was released in June 1969 that peaked at 6th on the Billboard 200 chart.
Elton released two albums in 1970 that hit various international music charts and received Gold and Platinum certifications. His fourth record, Madman across the Water came out in 1971 and proved to be another hit and went Double Platinum in the US. 1973 marked a major shift in his career as two of his albums topped the music charts in US, UK and Canada and turned out to be Multi-Platinum records. By the end of 70s, Elton had made his mark on the international music scene with his several chart cracking albums and singles.
The start of 80s brought more success as Elton John produced multiple hit albums. His 1980 album, 21 at 33 went Gold in the US, Canada and France. The 1983 studio record, Too Low for Zero cracked different foreign music charts and received Gold and Platinum certifications. A number of awards and international tours made Elton John one of the leading artists of the time. The wonderful 80s’ decade came to a close with his another hit album, Sleeping with the Past that topped the music chart in UK and went Platinum in various countries.
Elton’s stardom and fame never faded out and he released more successful albums in the coming years. Giving his career a new dimension, he began composing official soundtracks for various movies. Among his other music credits, Elton’s score for the 1994 Disney movie, The lion King earned him pervasive commercial and critical applause. He also won an Oscar for the song, Can’t You Feel the Love Tonight from the same movie.
He was admired for his duet album, The Union, with the famous musician Leon Russell which he released in 2010. His latest studio record is titled The Diving Board and was released in September 2013. The album reached at three on the UK music charts and received positive reviews from the music critics. With his groundbreaking technique and music sense, Elton continues to raise the bar in modern music.
