A Dramatic Tale
Shedding some light on the feelings of love, compassion and misery, War Horse presents the World War One in a different way. With some superb dramatics, the novel written for the kids by Michael Morpurgo has been adapted for stage by Nick Stafford. This take to tackle a child novel is absolutely imaginative and has been appreciated for its intuitive approach. The outstanding puppet-work is done by Handspring Puppet Company that turns this heroic tale into a theatrical masterpiece.
Stage Birth and Galloping Growth
The play made its debut at National Theatre in October 2007. The show completed its two successful Off-West runs in March 2009. It paved the way for its West End production that began at New London Theatre and opened for the public in April 2009. Earning critical and commercial acclaim, the show also won many awards like the Lawrence Olivier and London Critics' Circle Theatre Award.
The play made it to the Broadway stage in 2011 where it opened at Vivian Beaumont Theater in April. The show aimed to have a limited run with expected closing in June 2011, but a raving response by the critics and War Horse tickets sales made it an open-ended show. With a total of 718 amazing performances, the show closed in January 2013.
During its Broadway run, the play hit Toronto in 2012 and also started its first US national tour. In the same year the show premiered at the Arts Centre in Melbourne and spread like a new theatrical wave in Australia. With the promising international success of the play, War Horse will be playing in Berlin and also will headline its UK tour during the autumn 2013.
Critical Reception
Enjoyed by a diverse set of audience, the show earned great positive reviews from the critical circles for its uniqueness and wonderful theatrical treatment. The puppet work was admired for its freshness and grandeur. The play was said to be the “theatrical event of the decade” by The Times. The New York Times called it a “Theatrical magic! Watching Joey take on substance and soul before our eyes is thrilling!”. Overall the show was warmly welcomed by the audiences and theatre critics alike.
