Basis and Start

Based on the famous opera, La Boheme by the composer and musician, Giacomo Puccini, the book for the musical Rent was written by Jonathan Larson. Taking inspirations from Puccini’s timeless works, he developed the story of a rock opera that was earnest in its every regard. He went on to compose lyrics and songs for the musical and completed all the arrangements by the early 90s. Rent started its initial shows as a two-week workshop at The American Theatre in 1993. Exceptional critical and commercial reception led the musical to make its Off-Broadway debut in 1994. Selling out multiple shows, the musical entertained the masses before it shifted to Broadway.

Rocking Broadway

In April 1996, Rent debuted on Broadway at the Nederlander Theatre. Gaining an overwhelming response from the audiences and critics, the musical won four Tony and six Drama Desk Awards. This incredible success made way for many regional and North American productions and soon the popularity of the musical spread across the country. In 1998, Rent transferred to the West End and premiered at Shaftesbury Theatre. During the engagement, it was nominated for three Laurence Olivier Awards.

Other Productions and Revivals

During the Broadway engagement of the musical, a number of US national tours started and completed their successful runs in different states. Among these, Angel and Benny tours are most famous. The musical became an international hit when Australian and Irish productions began staging Rent in 1999 and 2000 respectively. In 2002, a Swedish version of the musical premiered at The Goteborg Opera and ran for over a year. In 2005, a motion picture based on the musical was also released and it turned out to be a commercial and critical success. Between 2005 and 2008, numerous touring companies showcased successful runs of the musical at different cities across the US. Rent was revived at the Prince of Wales Theatre and presented its goodbye performance in 2006. A school edition of the musical with the name Rent: School Edition was made available for theater amateurs. Different high schools with their resident cast presented the modified version of the musical at different destinations around the country. Rent tickets became one of the highly demanded musical tickets and it entertained thousands of theater lovers throughout the US and abroad. Most recently, Rent completed another great run at the Tabard Theatre in August 2013.
