Penn and Teller began performing together in 1975 when they were introduced to each other by Weir Chrisimer. Together the trio staged their first show at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival. Later, they continued performing at the Phoenix Theater in San Francisco as ‘The Asparagus Valley Cultural Society’. During early 1980s, Penn & Teller began performing as a duo and staged their first Off-Broadway show, ‘Penn & Teller Go Public’. The show was an instant hit with the audiences as well as critics. It was made into a TV special that aired on PBS. The TV special won them their first Emmy Award. In 1987, the artists made their way to the Broadway stage that was again met with critical acclaim. This was followed by numerous TV appearances by the duo on shows such as ‘Today’, ‘Late Night with Conan O’Brien’, ‘The Tonight Show with Jay Leno’, ‘Saturday Night Live’ and ‘Late Night with David Letterman’.
Penn & Teller: Bullshit!
The duo starred in an eight-season long documentary television series called ‘Penn & Teller: Bullshit!’. The show aired on Showtime in January 2003 and ended in August 2010, after 89 episodes. On the show, both the entertainers discussed various topics and themes, openly advocating for libertarianism, scientific skepticism and atheism. The show has presented vital segments on war on drugs, environmental issues, astrology and gun control.
The show received several accolades and honors over the years including Emmy Award nominations for ‘Outstanding Writing For Non Fiction’ and ‘Outstanding Reality Program’, Directors Guild of America Award nomination as well as Writers Guild of America Award nomination. It was awarded the 2004 Writers Guild of American Award for ‘Best Comedy/Variety TV Series’.
