Based on Harold Gray Comic strip Little Orphan Annie, Annie the musical is winning the hearts of theatergoers since a long time now. The lyrics of the musical are written by Martin Charnin while music is composed by Charles Strouse. The musical has received numerous awards and has been staged in theaters all around the world.
Annie had its world premiere at Goodspeed Opera House on August 1976. The original Broadway production opened in Alvin Theatre on April 1977 featuring Andrea McArdle as Annie. It was nominated for eleven Tony Awards including Best Score, Best Book and Best Musical. It also set a record for the longest running show at Alvin Theatre after 2,377 performances. During Broadway run of Annie, four touring companies were launched to tour major US cities. Before touring Britain, the musical was transferred to Bristol Hippodrome for a special Christmas performance. A 20th Anniversary Broadway revival was played in 1997 titled, Annie The 20th Anniversary. The show was revived at the Victoria Palace in 1998. What followed were several tours, including US Tour, UK Tour and Australian tours. The 35th Anniversary production of Annie the musical opened on Broadway in 2012. Several International productions have been going on in Argentina, Denmark, Japan, Sweden, Singapore, Italy and several other countries.
The two-act musical is set in 1932 and it revolves around an eleven year old orphan girl named Annie. She lives in Municipal Girls Orphanage with other orphan girls. One day she escapes by hiding inside the laundry basket to find her parents. Soon she is caught by a policeman Lt Ward and brought back to orphanage home after which she is taken by Grace Farrell, an assistant to billionaire Oliver Warbucks, to spend Christmas holiday in mansion. The story continues as Annie and Warbucks tries to find Annie's parents. Annie meets the president Franklin D. Roosevelt and inspires him with her optimism. When it turns out that her parents died long ago, Warbucks adopts her. The story is about the struggles of Annie, her optimism and lust of other people involved. It teaches about love and inspiration through her journey to find her parents. The though-provoking plot and impressive storyline are the key factors in making this musical a runaway success.

Annie the musical has received several awards and accolades. Its original Broadway production became the winner of 7 Tony Awards including Best musical, Best Original Score, Best Choreography and Best Costume Design. It also received 7 Drama Desk Awards including awards for Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Book of a musical, Outstanding Choreography and Outstanding lyrics. When the musical was revived in 2013, it got a Tony nomination for Best Revival of a Musical.
