Top Hat- Basis

The show is based on 1935 movie of the same name. Featuring astounding musical numbers by the legendary lyricist and composer Irving Berlin, the movie became a smash hit. It starred beautiful screen couple Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers and turned out to be a great comedy musical by Mark Sandrich. The stage musical takes its basis from the movie and reinvigorates this masterpiece with an unforgettable theatrical touch.

Production History

With little modifications suitable for the stage, Top Hat musical premiered at the Milton Keynes Theatre in August 2011. The musical gained popularity more quickly than expected and the show embarked on its first UK tour. It hit the leading theatres throughout UK and amused hordes of audiences with its remarkable vibe and freshness. With little changes in the cast, the show transferred to the West End in 2012. It opened at the Aldwych Theatre in May 2012. Proving to be a great crowd pleaser, the musical received positive reviews from the theatre critics and won various accolades in 2013. Due to the increasing demand of the Top Hat tickets, the run of the musical was extended and it still plays at the Aldwych Theatre.

Team Credits

Revamping the original score created by one of the greatest musicians, Irving Berlin, the ensemble set the stage ablaze with the popular songs. For theatrical adaptation, the book was written by Mathew White and Howard Jacques. Mathew White, with his blessed artistic vision, directed the show that turned out to be the “Best Musical”. Besides Top Hat, his direction credits include Little Shop of Horrors, Sweet Charity, The Woman in Black, Carousel, The Magic Flute and many others. White has also acted in world famous musicals like The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Chicago, and Cinderella. The fantastic choreography is done by the Laurence Olivier winning Bill Deamer. His lively flair adds beauty to the original score and makes the musical a wonderful spectacle. As a choreographer, Deamer has worked in many other popular productions such as the revived version of Love Never Dies, Evita and Jekyll and Hyde. The beautiful costumes for the show are designed by Jon Morrell for which he won Laurence Olivier Award. He has contributed his talents for staging and design to numerous musicals, ballets and operas. Some of these include Talk of the City, Partenope and A Guide to Strange Places.
