Established in 1976, The Washington Ballet is one of America’s most renowned professional ballet institutions. Currently under the artistic directorship of Septime Webre, the organization has popular presentations to their repertory. It has celebrated the musical legacy of legends, Igor Stravinsky, Antonio Vivaldi, J.S. Bach, The Beatles, Johannes Brahms, Claude Debussy, Sergei Prokofiev, Wilhelm Hertel and Frank Sinatra, amongst others. The Washington Ballet’s Company Profile

Formed by Mary Day, The Washington Ballet initiated productions with the use of a grant funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. Peter Grigsby became the company’s first administrative director and started hiring professional dancers. Alton Miller became his successor and started working towards the expansion of the Washington Ballet. During its initial years the ballet institution hired upcoming choreographer Choo San Goh from the Dutch National Ballet to work on three shows. He worked for the organization till his demise. Overall Goh has choreographed nineteen ballets for the Washington Ballet. During the eighties the ballet company had produced and presented shows all across South America, Spain, Russia, Malaysia, Japan, Singapore and China. With this the Washington Ballet had been successful in establishing an international repute.

The Washington Ballet’s Repertory

It was in the year 1999 when founding member, Mary Day resigned as the organization’s artistic director and was replaced by Septime Webre. The American-Cuban director expanded the ballet’s reach and made it a global phenomenon. Some of Webre’s most popular works that have been presented by the ballet include Journey Home, Carmen, Where the Wild Thing Are, State of Wonder, Peter Pan, Oui/Non, Fluctuating Hemlines and Juanita y Alicia. It was during Webre’s directorship that the Washington Ballet toured in Havana. This made the arts company, the first American ballet institution to stage productions in Cuba since the year 1960. Two of the most recognized shows that have brought fame to the company include The Nutcracker and the Great Gatsby, both of which have been directed by Webre.

The Nutcracker

The prime dancers who make up the ballet organization include Jonathan Jordan, Zachary Hackstock, Francesca Dugarte, Aurora Dickie, Sona Kharatian, Hyun-Woong Kim, Ayano Kimura, Tamas Krizsa, Corey Landolt, Brooklyn Mack, Tamako Miyazaki, Andile Ndlovu, Jared Nelson, Ekaterina Oleynik, Maki Onuki, Morgann Rose and Luis R. Torres. Ballet lovers have the opportunity of watching these talented performers bring to stage another edition of The Nutcracker.
