One of the premier dance companies in Canada, the ballet features many internationally trained choreographers and rehearsal masters, most of whom are renowned names in their own rights. The ballet’s repertoire includes both classical and contemporary pieces, and it aims to promote the pursuit of technical and artistic excellence in ballet, while ensuring the art form remains popular in today’s world.

About the Ballet:

The Goh Ballet was established by renowned Chinese dancers, Choo Chiat and Line Yee Goh, who moved to Vancouver from China. They first established the Goh Ballet Academy in 1978, as a school to train aspiring young dancers in the classical art form. Along with the academy, the founding members also wanted to stage performances, thus the Goh Ballet Youth Company was established in 1979.  

The main objective behind the performing aspect was to raise cultural awareness in the community, and to ensure that the students at the academy have a chance to perform in front of big audiences. This helps to ease the transition from being just a student to becoming a professional dancer.

Over the years the ballet has established itself as one of Canada’s premier dance companies. Its wide ranging repertoire includes contemporary and classical ballet, Chinese and character dance and jazz, allowing the ballet to reach out to a more diverse audience. As a result, audience members to the Ballet’s performances, include youngsters, who aspire to become dancers and the seasoned dance aficionados who appreciate the art form.

The Nutcracker:

The Nutcracker is the annual traditional Christmas present which almost all major ballet companies in the country offer to the public in holiday season. Over the years, it has become an essential part of Christmas festivities in the country, with more and more dance companies staging it each year.

The classical masterpiece revolves around Clara, as she ventures into a dream world, and takes a journey through the Land of Snow to the Kingdom of Sweets, where she meets the Sugar Plum Fairy. The ballet will take the audience on an adventure which also includes the evil Mouse King and this army of mice, whom the gallant Nutcracker battles. All this is danced to Peter Illych Tchaikovsky’s legendary score, making the experience almost unforgettable.

Goh Ballet’s version will feature principle dancers from the Royal Danish ballet, while the Vancouver Opera Orchestra provides the music. Featuring more than two hundred glittering costumes, dramatic sets and an unforgettable tale, this two hour epic is sure today to provide a holiday family experience that you can cherish for years. 


Interesting Facts:

  • Prior to establishing the company, the founders of the Goh Ballet, Lin Yee Goh and Choo Chiat, were principal dancers with the National Ballet of China.
  • The ballet has extensively toured all over the world including countries like China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Japan and the United States.
  • The Goh Ballet academy features students from varying nationalities, including countries like England, Switzerland, Yugoslavia, Germany, Mexico, Japan and Peru among numerous others.
  • In 1994, the Company became the first Canadian organization to be invited to perform at the famous Rencontres Internationales de la Danse Festival in France. The performance brought an astonishing eight curtain calls.
  • Goh Ballet performers have performed and won awards at the prestigious Prix de Lausanne and Genee International Ballet competitions, becoming one of the few Canadian companies to do so.
