Miami City Ballet
The Miami City Ballet was formed in 1985 by the former principal dancer of New York City Ballet. Today the company features more than 55 dancers from different parts of the world, and it has almost a hundred ballets in its repertoire of performances which are played over hundred times annually. Miami City Ballet also serves as the resident company for several major theatres in Miami and South Florida.
There is also a ballet academy operated by the Miami City Ballet since 1993. The academy is dedicated primarily to train students to learn and develop dancing styles from classical to contemporary era. Almost 400 students attend the academy annually, with another 200 joining only for the summer intensive program. In 2000 the ballet company shifted to its current location, a custom-built facility for a professional ballet company.
The new season of the ballet company began mid October with a blast. Ballo della Regina started the season and impressed everyone with its beautiful precision and agility. The performance on stage took audiences’ breath away and left them wanting more. The play is not widely performed since the dances included in it are very difficult and demanding. But the talent of the Miami City dancers made it to appear effortless on stage. Set to music from infamous Don Carlo by Verdi, the performance is a delight for the ballet lovers.
Second in line is the company’s first ever performance by the Spanish contemporary choreographer Nacho Duato. The play is called ‘Jardí Tancat’, and it describes the absorbing story of strong-spirited people praying to God, a prayer that is never answered. This premier is scheduled to begin in January but the Miami City Ballet tickets for the upcoming performances are already in soaring high demand. The third super attraction for theatre fans and ballet lovers is the incredible combination of two amazing works. Song and dance distillation of the world-famous Broadway classic are performed by remarkably talented Miami City dancers, in the play ‘West Side Story Suite’.
