What Is Heathers’ Story, You Ask?

Titled as “what’s you damage”, Heathers’ story causes all sorts of damage, taking you on a journey from an innocent prom to hell. Based on the iconic dark comedy movie of 80s, this new Off-Broadway production takes the Heathers’ demons to a whole new level. The story of the musical revolves around the fictional Westerberg High and its students, who are terrorized by shoulder padded, cruelest but hottest girls of Ohio named Heather, Heather – and yes, Heather. Rejecting their reign of terror and evil, the misfit named Veronica Sawyer, who was initially a part of the quartet decides to find her own path and gets into relationship with the sexy dark stranger named J.D.

J.D. wants to get the Heathers trio in their place – which is six feet under. However, with this relationship comes something that Veronica Sawyer didn’t expect. Gradually, as she falls for the mysterious J.D., she becomes unknowingly responsible for a number of deaths among the high school hierarchy. This deliciously dark comedy musical is for everyone who is searching for something different than the usual love stories and clichéd tales of the past. Also, Heathers is an uplifting tale for all who have once been deep in trouble, high school or love.

Heathers from 1988

Featuring Christian Slater and Winona Ryder in the lead roles, Heathers the movie was released in 1988. The outcome of this venture was the Independent Spirit Award in the category of “Best First Feature”, awarded to the film’s producer, Denise Di Novi and writer, Michael Lehmann. Over the years, the film has been included in several grand lists such as “The 500 Greatest Movies of All Time” by Empire and fifth position on Entertainment Weekly’s “50 Best High School Movies”. When Daniel Waters came up with his screenplay for Heathers, he wanted its director to be Stanley Kubrick, whom he admired devotedly. Waters also said that he believed no one else can pull of a three hour movie other than Kubrick. However, after struggling for a long time, he couldn’t get his screenplay to Kubrick.

Giving up on the long wait, Waters decided to the hand script over to Michael Lehmann. Lehmann further took it to Denise Di Novi. Because of having a very dark subject matter, many actors turned down the role. The lead roles ended up with Ryder and Slater. The results were more than what Waters had expected; the film received strong rentals and sales.

Heathers – the Musical at Stage I

Heathers – the Musical was first presented at the live stage as a New York concert in 2010. The concert took place at Joe’s Pub and starred Annaleigh Ashford. However, there onwards the idea of a musical at Off-Broadway started to revolve. The production which was the outcome of this thought was staged in Los Angeles for a sold out run, causing all kinds of damage to the stage just like it was titled. Now a new production is being taken to New York’s New World Stages, where it will premiere in spring of 2014 and will run till September. The makers of Heathers – the Musical include lyricists and composers Laurence O’Keefe and Kevin Murphy. The production is choreographed by Marguerite Derricks and direction is yet again by Andy Fickman. The production is ready to spread the dark, infectious laughter at Stage I.
