Background and Basis

Domesticated is one of the acclaimed works of the genius playwright and storyteller, Bruce Norris. The play is masterfully written keeping real life issues, controversies and scandals. Besides the thematic significance, playfulness with the words and characters makes the play perfect for the stage. Norris himself has a great sense of theater and he has crafted some memorable plays and books.

Some of his award-winning works include The Pain and the Itch, Clybourne Park and The Low Road. Easily adaptable for stage, his plays represent his powerful vision, creativity and in depth understanding of characterization. Domesticated being his latest work, explores complexities of life in the wittiest way which makes it relatable for the mature theatergoers.

About the Show

Domesticated centers on Judy and Bill Pulver, played by Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Goldblum respectively, whose marriage and private relation is surrounded by a public scandal. Shedding light on significant subjects like, power, gender and politics, this perceptively written play is full of humor and dramatic twists. The theme of the play is heightened by the powerful performances by the actors who justify the plot as well as the artistic demands of the play.

Cast and Crew

The talented cast of the play includes some of the highly revered names of Hollywood and theater. The lead roles are played by Jeff Goldblum and Laurie Metcalf. Jeff is famous for his roles in the blockbusters like Jurassic Park, Independence Day and The Fly. Apart from movies, his famous Broadway projects include The Pillowman, The Play What I Wrote and The Moony Shapiro Songbook. He has been nominated for an Oscar and has won a Saturn Award for the ‘Best Actor’.

Laurie Metcalf is three times Emmy winner and is famous for her iconic roles in television series Roseanne and Desperate Housewives. Her big screen credits include Making Mr. Right, Mistress and JFK. She is also an eminent stage celebrity and is known for theatrical productions like Voice Lessons, November and The Other Place. The rest of the cast includes Mia Barron, Robin De Jesus, Emily Meade and Misha Seo.

Domesticated is directed by the theater veteran, Anna D. Shapiro. Her matchless abilities enable her to interpret Norris’s work in the most authentic way. Shapiro’s talents have won her many accolades including a Tony and a Drama Desk Award. Among her numerous theatrical productions, some of her famous credits as a director include Three Days of Rain, The Infidel, Purple Heart and August: Osage County.

The talented Jennifer Von Mayrhauser contributes as the costume designer whereas wonderful sets are designed by Todd Rosenthal. The complementing lighting of the play is planned by James L. Ingalls while John Gromada arranges the sound design of the play. The whole creative team works closely to make the play a well-adapted stage production.

Domesticated began its previews on October 10th and is currently playing at the Mitzi E Newhouse Theater. Produced by Lincoln Center, the play will be running through January 5, 2014.
