The Boston Ballet strives to bring new levels of excellence to the art form, both off stage as well as on the stage. As stated in their mission statement, they try to do this via three things; firstly, by trying to make ballet more accessible to the broader segments of the community, secondly by educating the community through ballet and about ballet and thirdly creating and developing new artistic pieces while still maintaining ballet’s rich legacy.

About the Ballet:

The ballet was founded in 1963 by Sydney Leonard and E. Virginia Williams. The ballet slowly started building a reputation for itself as a premier ballet company and in 1979 opened the Nervi Festival in Italy. In 1980, Violette Verdy became the artistic director of the company and the same year the ballet became the first American company to perform in China.

Other international and national tours followed as the company cemented its status as one of the best. They became the first ballet company to perform at the BESSIE Dance and Performance award ceremony and were the first major company to work with famous contemporary choreographers such as Ralph Lemon, Mark Morris, Helen Pickett and Susan Marshall.

In 2009, the company chose to make the famous Boston Opera House as its sole performing venue. The 2500 seat theater hall was completely renovated in 2004 and is now a state of the art performing venue offering excellent sightlines for the audience. It includes facilities like an orchestra pit, which the Ballet’s orchestra utilizes during live performances.

The Nutcracker:

The Nutcracker is the traditional Christmas present which almost all major ballet companies in the country offer to the public in holiday season and has become an essential part of Christmas festivities in the US. The Boston Ballet’s rendition of The Nutcracker has been staged annually for 42 years. The ballet is staged for more than a month during Christmas time and employs over 250 Boston Ballet performers.
