The stage performance is an adaptation of the Daniel Wallace's novel Big Fish: A Novel of Mythic Proportions. Additionally, the production is based on Tim Burton's Academy Award-winning film adaptation of the novel. The highly entertaining film was a major hit. Now the musical brings the characters to life in the singing and dancing extravaganza.
Story Line:
The story of the novel revolves around a travelling salesman Edward Bloom who is known for telling thrilling tales. These are loved by most people but his son William Bloom has his doubts about the authenticity of these tales. Called to his father's deathbed, William sets out to uncover the truth behind Edward's stories.
The musical enacts several of Edward's adventures. These involve mythical creatures in fanciful places. There are stories about giants, witches, haunted forests, circus and much more and make the heartwarming tale of father-son relationship more interesting. They also provide elements of comedy in this touching story of relationships.
Musical Numbers:
The outstanding musical score of the production is yet another accomplishment by the Grammy-nominated composer and lyricist, Andrew Lippa. There are various catchy and tuneful songs in the musical. These include the number Born for the Water, Time Stops, Little Lamb from Alabama, Fight the Dragons and many more.
Cast and Creative Team:The creative team has done a superb job. Costumes, lighting and visual effects all go on to make the fantasy worlds of the stories come alive. The story takes place in a variety of settings and there are various scenic changes. All of these are excellent examples of the creative aspects of the production and have been designed by Julian Crouch. Also lending his expertise is the Tony Award-winning costume designer, William Ivey Long, who has designed the vibrant costumes for the larger-than-life characters.
The production has been directed and choreographed by the five-time Tony Award winner Susan Stroman. Bearing her signature excellence, Big Fish - The Musical is sure to be another delight. The book for the musical has been written by John August. A renowned screen writer, he has the distinction of being nominated for an Oscar. He also holds the credit for writing the screenplay of the film version, Big Fish.
The cast of the production also boasts of mega names. Norbert Leo Butz stars in the lead role of Edward Bloom. A reputable actor, he holds the distinction of winning a Drama Desk Award, an Outer Critics Circle Award and Tony Awards. The rest of the cast is rounded up by Kate Baldwin, Bobby Steggert, Ben Crawford, Brad Oscar and many more.
Production History
The production's premiere was held in Chicago on April 13. After having successful tryouts at the Oriental in Chicago, the production is all set to hit Broadway. This September will see the musical having almost a month-long run at the Neil Simon Theatre, after which the musical will move on to enthrall Broadway audiences.
