San Jose Sharks have been pretty consistent in terms of making it to the playoffs since their inception. That run still hasn’t been good enough to help them win the conference title or the biggest prize in the game, the prestigious Stanley Cup. Sharks are looking to reverse the trend this season. And with the kind of firepower they have, it will take a brave man to bet against them. All this talk of them being Stanley Cup contenders has lifted the spirits of the fans quite a lot as well. San Jose Sharks tickets are in demand because the team in question is among the strongest in the league.

The Start

San Jose Sharks were incepted in the year 1991 but the wheels for that were set in motion about two decades back. George and Gordon Gund III, acquired minor ownership of the California Golden Seals in the year 1974 and played a big part in the team making the move to Cleveland. Not only that, but they also took over Minnesota North Stars and merged the two teams together.

Gunds had always wanted to have an NHL team representing the Bay Area but the dream never materialized. Howard Baldwin owned the Hartford Whalers and he wanted a new team to make its way to San Jose. NHL then stepped in and made a proposal that called for the Gunds to sell their share in North Stars to Baldwin in order to get a hockey franchise which was to be based in San Jose. They were also granted the opportunity to take some players from their old team to their new one which was to begin playing from the 1991-1992 season onwards.

Play Begins

San Jose Sharks didn’t have the best of seasons for the first two years. It was a case of third time lucky for them and Sharks turned things around beyond expectations in 1993-1994 campaign. They went 33-35-16 to take on hot favorites Red Wings in their first playoff series. Sharks sprang a huge surprise by beating their most illustrious rivals by four games to three. They faced Maple Leafs in the next round but came up short against them.

Division Titles

Six out of eight seasons including 1993-1994 ended up with postseason appearances for Sharks. They went one step further in 2001-2002 season by racking up ninety nine points to win the division title for the first time. That turned out to be a watershed moment for Sharks as they have gone on to win the division championship on five more occasions since then. They have also managed to get their hands on the Presidents Cup in the year 2009 for their exploits through the season.

San Jose Sharks will be looking to take a step or two more to make their consistency count. In the twenty one seasons they have played in, Sharks have missed the playoffs on only five occasions with two of them being their first couple of campaigns. The time has come for them to really stamp their authority on the league and it looks as if that is going to happen soon.
