The Chick-fil-A-Bowl was incepted as a source to raise much needed funds for the Lions Club of Georgia in the year 1968. The first edition of the game was held on 30th December, 1968 and pitted LSU against Florida State. It turned out to be one epic clash in which LSU came out on top by a margin of just four points by outscoring their opponents 31-27. That game was the start of a legacy that has now gone on to make the Chick-fil-A-Bowl one of the most watched annual college football games of the year.
Most Appearances and Wins
Numerous colleges have sent their teams to take part in the Chick-fil-A-Bowl over the years. A lot of them have made multiple appearances in the game but it is Clemson that leads that particular count with eight Chick-fil-A-Bowl game wins to their name. North Carolina State are in second place with seven appearances. They are followed by Louisiana State with half a dozen appearances. In terms of conference representation, the ACC has been represented thirty four times with SEC close behind, scoring thirty one. Independent schools are third on the list with fourteen appearances whereas the Big Ten has sent its team to the Chick-fil-A-Bowl nine times.
As far as wins go it is Louisiana State who leads the count with five Chick-fil-A-Bowl wins to their name. North Carolina State and Auburn are second with four wins apiece. Georgia and Clemson are a place behind with three victories each to show for their efforts over the years. SEC teams have won the Chick-fil-A-Bowl sixteen times, the most wins by any conference. Fifteen ACC sides have come out on top with independent schools being third on the list with nine victories.
The Chick-fil-A-Bowl has been played in three stadiums over the years. The first three editions took place at the Grant Field. The game was then moved to the Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium and that remained the case for two decades. The game needed a new venue after the 1991 edition and that new arena turned out to be the famous Georgia Dome where it has been based ever since.
