Introducing the Carolina Hurricanes

Created in 1971, the Carolina Hurricanes is a professional ice hockey franchise with its roots set in Raleigh, North Carolina. It currently competes in Eastern Conference’s Metropolitan Division of the NHL. The team’s home arena is the PNC Arena, an indoor arena that offers space for as much as nineteen thousand fans. It is the only major ice hockey team to compete professionally from the area of Raleigh. One of its fiercest rivalries is with the Edmonton Oilers, an NHL franchise that competed with the Hurricanes for the Stanley Cup game of 2005. The Hurricanes were able to beat the Oilers with a score of four to three.

All You Need to Know About the Hurricanes

The ice hockey franchise was created back in 1971. They were initially known as the New England Whalers and were a part of the World Hockey Association. It wasn’t until 1979 that the World Hockey Association and the National Hockey League merger took place that the Whalers relocated to the Raleigh and became the Carolina Hurricanes. With this they dropped the official colors used by Whalers’ that included silver, green and blue and adopted a new red and black scheme. As the Hurricanes, the team enjoyed a successful career. They have bagged a Stanley Cup in 2005, two Conference Championships in 2001 and 2005 and three Division titles in 1998, 2001 and 2005. Team members have also been awarded prestigious awards including Conn Smythe Trophy, Frank J. Selke Trophy, King Clancy Memorial Trophy, Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, Lester Patrick Trophy and Calder Memorial Trophy.

The Carolina Hurricanes have been to establish numerous records in NHL including the record for “most wins i.e. 52 for a season”, “most points i.e. 112 for a season”, “most consecutive wins i.e. 9” and “most consecutive home wins i.e. 12”.   1. Before becoming a part of the National Hockey League the Carolina Hurricanes competed in the World Hockey Association till 1979.

  3. In the 2012 season the Carolina Hurricanes ended their regular season with a score of 160, finishing third in the Northeastern Conference.
  4. To date, players’ jerseys that have retired include Glen Wesley (2), Gordie Howe (9), Ron Francis (10), Rod Brind’Amour (17) and Wayne Gretzky (99).
  5. The team has produced hall of famer, Ron Francis who received induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame back in 2007.
