Albany and Hockey
Albany has had a long and illustrious history with the sport of hockey. It all began when the Capital District Islanders were incepted. The team began to play for the first time during the 1990-91 season. They failed to make it to the playoffs in their debut campaign but went on to qualify for the postseason for the next two years straight.
The Arrival of the Albany River Rats
The name of the team was then changed to Albany River Rats in the year 1993 and that changed the team’s fortunes as well. The River Rats went on to capture third spot in the division. They went two steps further to lift the regular season division title at the end of the 1994-95 campaign. The feat was repeated next year as well. Not only that but they also managed to get their hands on four division championships between 1995 and 1998 to cement their place among the most dominant teams of that particular era. They also lifted the prestigious Calder Cup in 1995.
It was in 1998 that the team was put up for sale and Walter Robb stepped in to buy the team from Al Lawrence. That however didn’t really make too much of a difference to the standard of play and the River Rats failed to win any major title post 1998. The team’s major league affiliates, the New Jersey Devils had already severed ties with them in 2006.
The Albany Devils
With the team’s performances not showing any real signs of improvement, Walter Robb decided to sell the team to Michael Kahn. The new owners changed the name of the team to Charlotte Checkers. Robb on the other hand went to work to ensure that Albany had a new hockey team. The New Jersey Devils moved their minor league affiliates, the Lowell Devils to the city to begin play as the Albany Devils.
The new team started to play during the 2010-11 season but failed to record a winning season for the first two years. That looks like changing as the team has hit the ground running this time around. The Albany Devils are showing some serious progress this year and it looks as if they really do mean business. The campaign has got off to a flyer and now all eyes are upon the Devils to see where it ends. Early signs are positive so if they keep on going like this, then it promises to be one intriguing year.
