The Start

Winnipeg Jets trace their roots back to the days of a hockey team called the Atlanta Thrashers. It was in the year 1997 that Atlanta was given a team. It was however in 1999 that the Thrashers were formed. They took to the rink for the first time in their history on 2^nd October 1999 but ended up losing that game 4-1. Their captain Kelly Buchberger scored the solitary goal to become the first Thrashers player to get his name on the scoreboard. The season didn’t really turn out to be a roaring success and Thrashers ended up at the bottom of the division.

Division Championship

The Atlanta Thrashers didn’t make it to the playoffs for the next few seasons but their form started to show some improvement during mid 2000’s. They won more games than they lost for the first time at the end of the 2005-2006 season. That gave them the encouragement to take the next step and that is exactly what they did. Thrashers went on to post a 43-28-0 record on the board next season which was good enough to clinch the division crown. In their first playoff appearance, the team ended up coming short against the much fancied and more experienced New York Rangers.

Slump and the Move to Winnipeg

The team’s form began to suffer not long afterwards and the management decided to sell the franchise. Owners of the MTS Centre bought the team and immediately moved it to Winnipeg. The Winnipeg Jets began to play in their new home and new city starting 2011-2012 season. They fared quite well in their first campaign winning thirty seven, losing thirty five and drawing ten games. The last season turned out to be more along the same lines. It was a curtailed campaign and Jets posted a 24-21-3 record over the course of forty eight games. They came second in the southeast division but that record still didn’t take them to playoffs.

Jets are about to start their third season in Winnipeg. Will it be third time lucky for them is a question on everyone’s minds. There are no doubts the team has the potential to make it to the playoffs. Let’s see if the Jets finally take off and reach new heights.
