About the Nats

The club was established in 1969 with the name of Montreal Expos and was the first major league team to be founded in Canada. The Expos started off performing really well but subsequently lost fan interest as they shed some players. The team was purchased by MLB in 2002 and moved to Washington in 2005, taking the name Nationals. The team now plays in the East Division of the National League. The team is one of the only two franchises of MLB after Seattle Mariners that haven't been to a World Series until now. Nationals have won two Division Titles; in 1981 and 2012.

Notable Moments

  • The Washington Nationals had their first-ever regular season win in 2005 where they beat Philadelphia Phillies 7-3.
  • It was a game of season 2006 on Father's Day that the Nationals saw an attendance of 45,157 which was the third largest attendance in the history of RFK Stadium. Nationals played against New York Yankees in this game, beating Yankees 3-2.
  • Nationals wore baseball hats of Virginia Tech in April 2007 as they played against Braves. The act was done in honor of the mass killing of 33 students and faculty at Virginia Tech.
  • The 2008 season of the team began at their new ballpark, Nationals Park.
  • In the 2009 season, two Nationals' players wore jerseys with Nationals spelled wrong. Those jerseys were changed during the same game but spawned great media attention and jokes.
  • The 2010 season was inaugurated by President Barack Obama who threw out the first ceremonial pitch as per the tradition.
  • The Nationals made a second-best record in 2011 season since the team's move to Washington.
  • The game of 2012 season with Los Angeles Dodgers was a good one for the team as beating Dodgers made Nationals the first team from Washington to advance to postseason.

Nationals' Ballpark

Washington Nationals moved to a new ballpark, Nationals Park, in 2008. The first game was inaugurated by President George W. Bush as per the tradition. The Nationals enjoyed a dramatic win over Atlanta Braves in this first game. The first home run was made by Chipper Jones and its announcement was made by the President himself. Nationals played in RFK Stadium for a short while until the opening of their own home stadium. The team use Space Coast Stadium in Viera, Florida as the venue for spring training. They will be practicing their till 2015. Washington National tickets for the regular season as well as the spring training are a favorite commodity in the state.

  1. ‘Beltway Series' is the nickname for the rivalry between the Nationals and Baltimore Orioles. The teams have been playing together since 2005.
  2.  The Nationals run a charity foundation with the name of The Washington Nationals Dream Foundation.
  3. A ‘Ring of Honor' was established to honor the notable players of the team at the Nationals Park in 2010.
  4. Frank Robinson is the only player from Washington Nationals who got inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
  5. Manager of the team, Davey Johnson announced in 2012 that season 2013 will be his last year with the team.
