Formation

Tampa Bay Lightning was initially formed as an expansion franchise for the 1992 NHL season. The bid for the expansion club was won by Phil Esposito, who later took the position of team’s general manger as well as president. Star coach Terry Crisp was hired as the team’s first head coach.

 

The club played its first official match at the Florida State Fairground’s Expo Hall. They played against the Chicago Blackhawks and surprised the ice hockey circuit by winning the match 7-3. The Lightning continued to impress throughout their inaugural season, even though they failed to bag any major title.  For their second season, the team joined the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference and relocated their home arena to Florida Sincast Dome.

 

Championships

The Lightning’s first successful season was in 2002, when they managed to finish in the division’s top spot, winning the ‘Atlantic Division Title’. The following year, the team managed to bag its first ‘Stanley Cup’. They defeated the Philadelphia Flyers to win the ‘Western Conference Championship’ and advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals, where they met the ‘Western Conference Winner’ Calgary Flames. The Lightning defeated the Flames 4-3, taking home the ‘Stanley Cup’. With twenty-six points and twelve goals, Brad Richards was awarded the ‘Playoff MVP’ title, where as Martin St. Louis won the ‘Season MVP Award’ for his outclass performance.
