The Main Event

The forthcoming game between the two competitors is expected to take place at the Pit Arena. Both the collegiate basketball programs will be battling it out on the grounds of the University of New Mexico. Will Lobos’ vengeance prove worthy at their own home stadium? Or will the Aztecs taste sweet victory yet again? The 1.4 million dollar arena will truly bring an exciting game that will enthrall basketball fans of all ages. Inaugurated back in 1966, the first game that was held at the multi-purpose facility was between the New Mexico Lobos and the Abilene Christian College. The Lobos won the game with a score of 62-53. Over the years, the venue has undergone several renovations that have brought the seating capacity up from 14831 to 15411. Over the years the Pit Arena has hosted countless NCAA Tournaments such as the 1968 West Regional, the 1983 Final Four, the 1992 West Regional and the 2005 Albuquerque Regional. This time the vicinity is hosting a forthcoming basketball game between the San Diego State Aztecs and the New Mexico Lobos.

San Diego State Aztecs

The San Diego State Aztecs is the name given to the collegiate sports and teams from the San Diego State University. Established in 1897 the prestigious educational institution supports over seventeen varsity sports’ teams. Some of the programs that are offered include football, basketball, baseball, softball, rowing, gymnastics, golf, diving, track, tennis, water polo and swimming. The primary conference these teams partake in is the Mountain West Conference. With the Qualcomm Stadium as the university’s home stadium, all the team’s from the San Diego State University compete in National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division I. Nicknamed the Aztecs, the teams usually support the colors red, white and black at a majority of their games. This time, the basketball program from the university is gearing up to compete in an upcoming event.

The Basketball Program

Aztecs’ men’s basketball team was founded back in 1921. Currently a part of the Mountain West Conference, the team practices at the Viejas Arena. Initially joining the Southern California JC Conference, the team started playing in Division III. Winning a massive amount of 6 NAIA tournaments, the team moved on to NAIA’s Division I in 1939. After a mere two seasons the basketball program was seen bagging the NAIA Division I Trophy and became championships in 1941. It wasn’t until the year 1970 that the team became a member of NCAA’s Division I. Initially playing in the Western Athletic Conference, the team remained a part of the division until its move to the Mountain Western Conference in 1978. Ever since joining this conference, the basketball team has bagged 4 Conference titles and has played in 4 NIT Playoff games and 4 NCAA Championships. The team’s highest ranking was in the 2011 season when the Aztecs were placed at number four in the NCAA Basketball Ranking.

With Steve Fisher as the team’s current head coach, the Aztecs are practicing hard to defeat their rivals, the New Mexico Lobos, once again.
