Team History

In 1969, the Padres were made a part of the Major League Baseball as an expansion team. The team was initially owned by a San Diego businessman, C. Arnholt Smith. Despite initial excitement, the Padres failed to impress and consistently lost games during their early years. They performed poorly during their first six season, finishing at last place in all of them. Even though the team faced heavily loses, the Padres comprised of highly talented players like Nate Colbert who kept the fans interest in the franchise.

Championships

In 1984, the team emerged as a breakthrough club when it managed to first win the ‘West Division Title' and then the ‘National League Pennant' to qualify for the World Series Finals. The Padres defeated the Chicago Clubs 3-2 to win the ‘National League Championship'. However, the team was defeated in the World Series Finals by Detroit Tigers.
In 1996, the Padres once again grabbed the ‘West Division Title' but failed to capitalize the achievement to win that year's ‘NL Pennant'. They repeated their 1984 success during the 1998 season, by first winning the ‘Divisional Title' and then bagging the ‘NL Pennant' for the second time. Since then, the team has won two more ‘Divisional Titles', most recently in 2006.
