The thing with preseason games is that they are used to finalize rosters, try new plays and tactics and get players in shape for the new season. Still it wouldn’t hurt to go into a new campaign after a solid preseason. The impact of these games on the Steelers over the course of the regular season remains to be seen which makes it even more fascinating for everyone connected with one of American Football’s biggest names.

The Start

Arthur J. Rooney, also known as Art Rooney was a brilliant athlete who was good at multiple sports. It was his love for everything sports that eventually led him to form the Pittsburgh Steelers in early 1930’s. The team, however, could not meet the expectations of their fans for the first four decades or so. Between their inception in 1933 all the way to 1970’s, they had a solitary playoff appearance to show off their efforts. The hard work, however, had been done behind the scenes and the Steelers were about to go on a rampage.

First Taste of Success

The start of 1970’s signaled the change of fortunes for the Pittsburgh Steelers. They started the decade by winning their first major title, the division championship in the year 1972. That success gave the team a much needed confidence boost and the Steelers made the most of it in 1974 by winning the division, conference and Super Bowl titles. If anyone had any doubts about their credentials, those misgivings were put to rest next year when they went on to complete the division, conference and Super Bowl hat trick for the second time in successive seasons.

They won the division again in 1976 and 1977 and followed that up by winning the division, conference and Super Bowl in 1978 and 1979 for two years straight. With those triumphs, the Steelers ended a decade of dominance that put them right up there among the best in the business.

The Next Two Decades

The Pittsburgh Steelers didn’t reach those lofty heights for the next two decades but still managed to win multiple division and conference championships. The Super Bowl eluded them all through that time but that didn’t stop them from keep accumulating the other two titles. The Steelers clinched the division crown twice during the 1980’s and five times during 1990’s. They also got their hands on one conference title during this time.

Rise To the Top Again

The Pittsburgh Steelers had not won a Super Bowl since 1979 so they went about putting that record straight when the new millennium rolled into town. They started off by winning three division titles in 2001, 2002 and 2004. It was the year 2005 that saw them make it to the top once again. It turned out to be a historic season which saw them lift their sixth division title and fifth Super Bowl.

One more division championship followed in the year 2007 before they clinched another division, conference and Super Bowl treble at the end of next season. The Steelers then went on to do the division and conference double in 2010 to cement their place at the top of the mountain as a truly iconic team.
