Comprising of nineteen varsity teams, the Pittsburgh Panthers have enthralled thousands of sports fans around North America. Representing the University of Pittsburgh, the Panthers are a part of the NCAA’s Division I; the highest level of collegiate athletics in the US. This season, the Panthers’ men basketball as well as football teams will be taking on the respective varsity teams of Syracuse Orange. Men’s Basketball

Playing in the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Pittsburgh Panthers men’s basketball team has managed to bag four ‘Conference Championships’, seven ‘NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen Titles’, three ‘Elite Eight Titles’ and one ‘Final Four Title’. The team plays its home matches at the Petersen Events Centre.

Over the years, the Panthers men’s basketball team has achieved numerous successes. The team has produced highly celebrated players including Helms Foundation Basketball Hall of Fame inductees Don Hennon, Charley Hyatt and Henry Carlson. The Panthers have been drafted twenty-six times by the NBA, with Steven Adams being the most recent first round NBA draft pick. Currently, the Panthers are led by celebrated coach Jamie Dixon, who will be leading the team for eleventh successive year. 

Men’s Football

Football has always been the most popular sport at the University of Pittsburgh. The sport has been played at the highest level at the university since 1889. The team has helped pioneer football by introducing numerous traditions including the use of numbers on jerseys as well as unifying the Sugar Bowl. Footballs’ greatest coaches have all been a part of the Pitt’s football program including Darrelle Revis, Curtis Martin, Dan Marino, Hugh Green, Joe Schmidt and Jock Sutherland.

Playing its inaugural season in 1890, the team currently is a part of the Coastal Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference. With nine ‘National Championships’, the team is amongst the top college football clubs in terms of all-time wins. They have also bagged fourteen ‘Conference Championships’ with most recent win coming in 2010. The team, led by Head Coach Paul Chryst, plays home games at the Heinz Field that boasts a capacity of over sixty five thousand seats.

The Live Matches

The Pittsburgh Panthers will be playing rivals Syracuse Orange at the Carrier Dome. The largest domed stadium in the country, the venue has been hosting lacrosse, basketball and football matches since its opening in 1980. Constructed with a cost of over seventy-six million dollars, the facility currently boasts a capacity of more than forty-nine thousand seats for football matches and just over thirty-five thousand seats for basketball games.
