The Phoenix Suns are looking to get their act together after an underwhelming season. They have tackled the issues plaguing the team head on. The arrival of a new GM and a head coach were the first two steps towards getting things right again. The arrival of talented players like Alex Len, Archie Goodwin, Eric Bledsoe, Ish Smith, Gerald Green and Mike Plumlee is a welcome addition. It is expected to add skill and depth to the roster. The Beginning

The Phoenix Suns were incepted as an expansion franchise in the year 1968.  The team’s first season however wasn’t a success and the Suns finished with a disappointing 16-66 regular season record. They made it to the playoffs next season and posted their first winning record the season after that. They blew hot and cold for the next few seasons, posting some winning seasons and making the playoffs on a few occasions. No championships were won during that time.

Some Success

It was in the 1975-1976 season that the Suns really made their mark on the league. They went on to record forty two wins that season and qualified for the playoffs for the first time in half a dozen years. They went on to face the much fancied SuperSonics in the conference semis and proceeded to defeat them. In the finals they went head-to-head with the reigning NBA title holders the Golden State Warriors. In what turned out to be a pulsating series, the Suns beat the league champions to pick up their first conference title. They went on to clinch their first division crown five years later in 1981.

1990’s and Onwards

The division win of 1981 was followed by an extended period during which the team won no championships. The Phoenix Suns had a lean patch that lasted for the next twelve years. Changes were made to the roster and all the pieces began to fall in place once again. The 1992-1993 season put the Suns back on track. They won the division and beat the Lakers, Spurs and SuperSonics in the playoff first round, the conference semi and the conference finals respectively. In NBA finals they took on the dominant team of that era, the rampaging Chicago Bulls. The Suns fell short in the series by four games to two. One more division championship was won by the Suns in 1995 before another decade of no championships hit them. They clinched their fourth division title in the year 2005 and repeated the feat twice for the next two years as well. That was the last of their championships till now. Four of the six seasons since 2007 have ended with winning records. That might not look too bad overall but the two losing records were posted in the last three years. It forced the owner to make changes. It will take time to get back to championship level but this is the first step in the right direction which might at least bring a division crown their way rather soon.
