Origin of Supercross

The first recorded motorcycle competition held on a man-made course inside a stadium took place in 1948. Promoted by Pierre Bardel, the event was held at the Buffalo Stadium in France. Similar event was later held in 1956 in Czechoslovakia, where hundred thousand Czechs gathered on the ‘Great Victory Day’ to witness the races.

In the US, motocross gained significant popularity during the 1960s. Many promoters began staging large events and competitions around the country. In 971, Dayton International Speedway hosted its first professional motocross event featuring man-made terrains and courses, where Brian Kenny and Gunner Lindstrom bagged the ‘500 class’ and ‘250 class championships’ respectively. This was arguably the first event that gave birth to supercross in the US.

However, most fans and critics regard promoter Mike Goodwin for starting the real Supercross frenzy around the nation. Mike Goodwin’s 1972 event, promoted as the ‘Super Bowl of Motocross’, attracted over twenty eight thousand fans and featured top motocross races from around the world.
