The school’s major sports include basketball, football, hockey, cross country, baseball, softball, soccer, boxing, tennis, wrestling and golf. The various teams have been quite successful in their respective fields and the Spartans have won conference titles or national titles in almost all of these sports.
Basketball:
The Spartans’ men’s basketball team represents them in the Big Ten Conference of the NCAA Division 1. The team’s home arena is the Breslin Student Events Center and since 1995, they have been coached by Tom Izzo, who has guided the team through a long period of success.
The Spartans basketball team has been quite successful over the years and has a legacy it can be proud of. They have won thirteen Big Ten Championships and two NCAA Championships. The team has been selected for sixteen consecutive NCAA tournament bids which is the third longest streak. The Spartans have made an impressive twenty seven appearances in NCAA tournaments and have made it to the Final Four stage eight times in its history, with back to back appearances in 2009 and 2010.
Spartan alumni currently playing or having formerly played in the NBA include some great names like Maurice Ager, Alan Anderson, Earvin "Magic" Johnson, Mateen Cleaves, Johnny Green and Paul Davis, Terry Furlow and Jamie Feick to name a few.
Football:
The Spartans football team also plays as a member of the Big Ten in the NCAA Division 1 Football Bowl Subdivision level. The team has been quite successful over its long history, and has won six national championships, two Michigan intercollegiate Athletic Association championships and seven Big Ten Conference Championships.
The team’s home arena is the famous Spartan Stadium, which has been their home for the past ninety years. It is the sixth largest Big Ten stadium and has a seating capacity of over seventy five thousand. The team’s traditional arch rival is the University of Michigan football team against whom they compete for the annual Paul Bunyan Trophy.
Hockey:
The Spartans ice hockey team is the only Spartan team which does not participate in the Big Ten conference, since the Big Ten does not cover Division I hockey. Instead the team participates in the Center Collegiate Hockey Association, making it the third Big Ten school to do so. The team plays its home matches at the Munn Ice Arena.
The ice hockey team, just like the football and basketball teams, has also been very successful. The team has won seven CCHA regular season championships and has eleven CCHA tournament titles to its name. The team has also won three national titles, winning the last one in 2007.
