Early Years
Formed as an expansion team in 1988, the Miami Heat was made a part of the Eastern Conference of the NBA. The team failed to impress during its first eight years, qualifying for the playoffs only two times. However, in 1995, Micky Arison bought the franchise and hired Coach Pat Riley, point guard Tim Hardaway and center Alonzo Mourning. This transformation led to improved match ratings for the team. For the 1996 season, the Heat managed to impress with the franchise best record of 61-21. The team continued to dominate throughout the late 1990s and became known as the ‘Road Warriors’ during this period.
In 2005, the Heat became a part of the newly formed Southeast Division, competing against teams such as the Washington Wizards, Orlando Magic, Charlotte Bobcats and Atlanta Hawks.
NBA Championships
In 2006, the Heat managed to make its first ever NBA Finals appearance and won the ‘NBA Championship’ after defeating Dallas Mavericks 4-2. Pat Riley resumed his head coaching position during the season and brought in Jason Williams, Antoine Walker and Gary Payton. Veteran Heat player Dwayne Wade was awarded the ‘Finals MVP’ for his efforts.
After four years of post-title struggles that included the league’s worst season record of 15-67, Miami Heat once again managed to find success during the 2012 and 2013 season. With LeBron James’ stellar performances in both seasons, Miami Heat won two consecutive ‘NBA Championships’ with LeBron being named the ‘Finals MVP’ both times.
