About the Event

The forthcoming Memphis Tigers game is expected to take place at the Fifth Third Arena located in Cincinnati, Ohio. Inaugurated in 1987, the multi-purpose arena that cost over sixty million dollars to construct is one of the area’s most popular basketball facilities. Over the years, the Fifth Third Arena has hosted games namely Great Midwest Conference Basketball Tournaments, Conference USA Men’s Volleyball and Basketball Games, Big East Volleyball Championship, NCAA West Women’s Basketball Sub Regional Games. With a seating capacity that can cater to as much as thirteen thousand audiences, the venue is now hosting an exciting game between some of the best collegiate basketball programs.

The Memphis Tigers

The Memphis Tigers is the name given to the sports programs that play from the University of Memphis. With a total of nineteen varsity teams that consist of nine men’s teams and nine women’s teams, the Memphis Tigers’ athletics department is managed by Tom Bowen. The university comprises of sports such as baseball, basketball, cross country, tennis, soccer, football, track and field, rifle, golf, volleyball, spirit squads and softball. Supporting the colors blue and gray, the Memphis Tigers didn’t get their official name until 1914 after several students referred to the players playing like tigers. Established in 1912, the football team of the University of Memphis was one of the first few programs that were established. Basketball, softball, basketball and soccer programs were initiated within two years of time. This time, the popular Memphis Tiger’s basketball team is preparing to take on the Cincinnati Bearcats.

Introducing the Team

Even though the basketball program was initiated in 1914, it wasn’t until 1920 that the team played its first official game. The first coach was Zach Curlin who managed the team while it competed in the Mississippi Valley Conference. Currently the Memphis Tigers are a part of NCAA Division I and compete in American Athletic Conference. Initially, the basketball program practiced at a local high school gym and it wasn’t until 1929 that they were awarded their own one hundred thousand dollar facility on campus. The Memphis Tigers currently practice at the state of the art facility named, the FedEx Forum. With Josh Pastner as the team’s head coach who assumed the position in 2009, the team has enjoyed its most successful career winning an NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen Tournament, four Conference Tournament Championships, and three Conference Regular Season Championships with four consecutive playoff tournament appearances.

The Memphis Tigers’ are one of America’s most popular collegiate basketball franchises. ESPN Research ranked the team number fourteen in their list of “Most Prestigious Modern Day Basketball Teams”. Furthermore ESPN’s Information and Stats Department ranks the Tigers in nineteenth place as being the most successful team from 1962 till 2012. Over its lifetime, the Memphis Tigers have bagged three NCAA Tournament Final Four wins, six NCAA Tournament Elite Fight games, eleven NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen cups and Conference Tournament Championship wins, fourteen Conference Regular Season Championships and a massive amount of twenty five tournament appearances.
