From Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons to Detroit Pistons

It was back in 1941 that the National Basketball League formed a basketball franchise and named it the Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons. Practicing and competing in North Side High School’s gymnasium, the club was founded by Fred and Janet Zollner. During its early years, the team bagged two NBL Championships in the years 1944 and 1945. They also became the champions of World Professional Basketball Tournament from 1944 to 1946, after which the team became members of the Basketball Association of America. They played in the BAA for a year after which Fred Zollner established the NBA, with a merger between the National Basketball League and the Basketball Association of America. The Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons switched to NBA and have been a part of it ever since. After a few years, Zollner decided that the Pistons needed to be in a bigger city in order to be more profitable since a small city like Fort Wayne didn’t allow them to establish a large fan following. Thus in 1957, the Fort Wayne Pistons relocated to Detroit becoming the Detroit Pistons. They started playing at the Olympia Stadium which became their home arena for four seasons, before moving to the Cobo Arena.

New Beginnings

Zollner’s decision to relocate the team was a good one, since then the Pistons started being recognized as one of the top clubs of the NBA. They scored all of their championship and title wins after they relocated. The team has also produced top notch players who have established countless game records and won numerous individual awards, from Defensive Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Coach of the Year to All-NBA First, Second and Third Team Awards, to name a few. The Detroit Pistons are a force to reckon with. Watch your favorite team play at a forthcoming game by buying Detroit Pistons tickets.
