The Colorado Buffaloes refer to the seventeen varsity sports teams which represent the University of Colorado in their NCAA Division I sports competitions. Collectively, both the women’s and men’s teams are called the Buffaloes, or sometimes referred to as the Golden Buffaloes. Colorado has won 26 national championships in its history, with an impressive nineteen titles in skiing. The school has recently joined the Pacific-12 conference, where they play the majority of their sports with the main exception being skiing.

Football:

Football was introduced in the college in 1890. Since then, the Buffaloes have enjoyed a lot of success in the sport. The school ranks sixteenth on the all time NCAA Division I winners list and ranks twenty second on the all-time winning percentage list with an impressive winning percentage of .614.

The Buffaloes play their home games at the Folsom Field, which was built in 1924 and they have a 280-132-10 record at home. The team has won numerous bowl games and conference championships. As of 2013, they have won twelve bowl games out of twenty seven appearances and have won a combined twenty six conference championships and four division titles. In 1990, the Buffaloes won their first and only national championship title, after posting an 11-1-1 season. In 1994, Rashan Salaam became the school’s first Heisman Trophy winner.

Basketball:

Coached by Tad Boyle, the Buffalo’s basketball team also plays in the Pacific-12 conference. Just like the rest of the school, they joined the Pacific-12 conference in 2012, and won the conference tournament in their first season as a member.

Over all the Buffalos have competed in twelve NCAA Tournaments and their most recent appearance was in 2013. They have made it to the final Four twice (1942, 1955), the Elite Eight four times, and the Sweet Sixteen four times as well. The team’s strongest run in the tournament was in 1942, when they lost in the final to the Stanford Cardinal. The Buffs have been crowned conference regular season champions nine times.

Skiing:

The most successful sport for the Colorado Buffaloes has been skiing. The ski team competes in the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association, and is one of only two Pacific-12 schools that does so, the other being Utah. The Buffalos are one of the most dominant skiing teams in the NCAA and have won eighteen NCAA Championships, with the most recent coming in 2013. They have also won an AIAW Championship, which takes their combined total to nineteen national championships.

A testament to their outstanding skiing record is the fact that in the last eight years, they have finished in the top three in the NCAA, and have won three titles. The school has also won eighty six individual titles in NCAA skiing.

Apart from these main sports, the Buffaloes have won a combined six cross country national titles, which amounts the school’s total to twenty six team national championships.
