Cincinnati has a long illustrious history with baseball. The sport's first ever professional team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings, stepped up to the plate in 1863. Red Stockings stopped playing in 1970 and in the next year, a few players from the same team got together in Boston to start the Boston Red Stockings. Meanwhile another brand new Cincinnati Red Stockings came to the fore and joined the National League as a charter member in 1976.  That association lasted for only four years.

The Beginning of Cincinnati Reds:

The third baseball team in Cincinnati originated in 1881 and it became one of the teams to form the now defunct American Association. The Red Stockings remained an AA member will 1889 before making the move to the NL. As an American Association franchise they managed to win one pennant in 1882. With the move to NL, the word Stockings was dropped from the team's name.

Hits and Misses:

The team didn't make any sort of major impact for two decades. The Reds tasted success for the first time as a NL team in 1919 when they won the pennant. Not only that, but they also went all the way to the World Series and beat the Chicago White Sox to win the biggest prize in the sport. The Reds then hit a bit of a brick wall and it took them quite a while to get up and get going once again. It was in the year 1939 that they won their second NL and third pennant overall. The revival was well and truly underway and they won the pennant as well as the World Series the following year. The momentum from those triumphs wasn't carried forward and the Reds form suffered. They won just one pennant for the next three decades.

The Epic 1970's:

The start of 1970's turned the team's fortunes around once again. The Reds won their first ever division title in 1970 to go with another pennant. The achievement was repeated in 1972. A third division crown followed next year. 1975 turned out to be a historic year for the Cincinnati Reds. They went on a rampage and got their hands on all three prizes up for grabs that season. They proved that was no fluke by repeating the trick next year as well. They closed a spectacular decade of success by clinching one more division title in 1979.

On a Winning Spree:

Cincinnati Reds didn't do anything of note in 1980's but 1990 saw them once again become the team to beat. That year, the Reds once again did the division, pennant and the World Series treble for the third time in their history. They won another division crown in 1995. Keeping true to their history, they once again hit a stumbling block and took a decade and a half to get their bearings right once again by winning two division titles in 2010 and 2012. Now that they are on the right track once again let's wait and see what the future holds for this fascinating franchise.
