The Chicago Sky made a flying start to the current WNBA season and the team's latest recruit Elena Delle Donne more than played her part in that. Elena was the second overall draft pick and she has fitted into how Sky works pretty seamlessly. The team looks to be in good spirits and if they keep on going like that then their first playoff appearance might not be too far away after all.
The Chicago Sky joined WNBA ranks around eight years ago. On court they have had a tough time but they kept going. All that perseverance seems to be paying off with the franchise making a pretty good start to the current WNBA campaign. Things are looking good now which bodes well for the rest of the season. Formation
It was in the year 2005 that NBA announced that the “Windy City” has been awarded its own WNBA team. It was a big moment and the management didn't waste any time in getting straight down to business. Dave Cowens was recruited and handed dual responsibilities of a coach as well as being the general manager.
Game History
Chicago Sky took to the basketball court for the first time in their history on 20th May, 2006. Their opponents on that historic day were Charlotte Sting. Sky triumphed by a single point in what turned out be a humdinger of a game. The season on the whole didn't go according to the script and Sky just managed to win four more games to end up capturing the last spot in the conference.
Next season was a big improvement. Chicago Sky recruited some new names and the changes worked quite well. They were in the frame to qualify for the postseason almost all through the season but narrowly missed out. On an individual level the young Armintie Price bagged the WNBA Rookie of the Year award for her efforts over the course of the season.
Things began to look up once again when 2009 campaign came to town. That year, Chicago Sky once again got very close to making the playoffs but like in 2007, they once again ended up coming short. The theme has more or less kept on repeating itself since then.
Home Arenas
The Chicago Sky moved into the “UIC Pavilion” when they were formed. They remained there for four year before re-locating to the Allstate Arena after the 2009 season. They started to play at their new home in 2010 and have been based there ever since then.
Winning Prospects
Chicago Sky has gone perilously close to making the playoffs multiple times but due to one reason or another they always end up coming short. That trend might be bucked this season with the kind of start they have made. Will they be able to maintain this form or this is just another false dawn? That is a question in everyone's minds, one that will be answered in a few months from now.
