Formed back in 1972, the Calgary Flames are known to compete in Western Conference’s Pacific Division of the National Hockey League. Their home city, Calgary is considered to be a hub for ice hockey franchises, as the Flames share the space with the Calgary Cowboys and the Calgary Tigers. The team was initially known as Atlanta Flames, as it was based in Atlanta. Relocating to Calgary in 1980, the Atlanta Flames became the Calgary Flames. Currently one of the fiercest NHL rivalries is between the Edmonton Oilers and the Calgary Flames. Their games are known as the “Battle of Alberta” and are heated events. Watch this top NHL franchise compete this time as it takes on the Winnipeg Jets.

Team Beginnings

The Atlanta Flames were created as a result of National Hockey League’s strike against the World Hockey Association. When the NHL created the New York Islanders to grab hold of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Long Island, the league had to create another franchise to balance their schedule. The NHL granted Tom Cousins, a real estate developer with the authority of creating an ice hockey team in Atlanta and he came up with the Atlanta Flames. The team saw early successes in their initial years as head coaches Al MacNeil, Fred Creighton and Bernie Geoffrion took the team to six playoffs in eight seasons.

From Atlanta Flames to Calgary Flames

The year 1980 presented financial difficulty to Tom Cousins and he was forced to sell the franchise to Nelson Skalbania, a Canadian entrepreneur. With this the Atlanta Flames relocated to Calgary and became the Calgary Flames. The team was welcomed whole heartedly by the Calgary community and has enjoyed a successful career. They have been able to bag a Stanley Cup in 1988, two Presidents’ Trophies in 1987 and 1988, three Conference Championships in 1985, 1988 and 2003 and five Division Titles in 1985, 1988, 1993, 1994 and 2005. Under the leadership of head coach Mark Giordano, the renowned ice hockey team is all set to take on the Winnipeg Jets now.
