It was at the turn of the last century that Ban Johnson, founder of the Western League decided to go head to head with the National League. Name of the WL was changed to American League and Boston along with Philadelphia were awarded their own baseball teams. The Boston Americans thus came into existence in 1901 and baseball in the country changed forever.
 
The Legacy
Americans didn't take too long to make their mark and in just two years after their inception went on to win not only their first pennant but also the World Series title. Name of the franchise was then changed to its current one, Boston Red Sox and they began to play under their new name starting 1908.
A total of half a dozen pennants were won between 1903 and 1918. Not only that, but the Red Sox also managed to get their hands on five World Series Titles during that time. Everything was going well but then came what is arguably the most talked about moment in baseball history.
 
Curse of the Bambino
Red Sox sold their most potent weapon and talisman, Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees. The Yankees till that point were nowhere close to being the force they are today but that one transaction changed all that. Red Sox lost all the momentum whereas Yankees went from strength to strength.
 
Red Sox won only five division titles and four pennants between 1918 and 2003. It was an astonishing fall from grace so to speak. Their failure to win the World Series during that time was dubbed as “Curse of the Bambino.” The drought finally ended in 2004 as Red Sox won the pennant and most importantly their first World Series in eighty six years. 2007 saw them clinch the division title, the pennant and a seventh World Series Title overall.
 
Ballparks
Huntington Avenue Grounds was where the Boston Red Sox used to play when they first came on to the baseball landscape. That remained the case till 1911. The team moved to the famous Fenway Park and began to play there starting 1912. That has been the home of the Red Sox since then. The iconic venue made it into the National Register of Historic Places in the year 2012.
