The Beginning
Rob Thomas was born in Landstuhl, Germany, in 1972. He spent most of his childhood in Florida and South Carolina. At seventeen, he decided to pursue his passion for music professionally. He started performing at local clubs and events. After gaining considerable recognition and fan following, he joined hands with musicians Paul Doucette and Brian Yale to form the band Matchbox Twenty.
The band released their debut record, ‘Yourself or Someone Like You’ in 1996. With hit singles like ‘Push,’ ‘Real World’ and ‘Long Day,’ the album climbed the Billboard charts and sold more than five million copies. In 1997, Matchbox Twenty was voted the ‘Best New Band’ by the Rolling Stone Magazine readers.
Solo Career
After ten successful years as part of Matchbox Twenty, Rob Thomas decided to work on his solo music. In 2005, he released his solo debut album, ‘…Something to be.’ The collection was a huge success. Its lead song ‘Lonely No More’ ranked sixth on the US Billboard 100, while the single ‘This is How Heart Breaks’ was certified Gold.
In 2006, Rob Thomas’s song ‘Streetcorner Symphony’ was picked by ABC for its promotional ads. The following year Thomas came up with another hit song ‘Little Wonders.’ The track was ranked among the top five on the Mediabase Hot Adult Contemporary chart.
The year 2009 saw the release of the singer’s second solo studio album, ‘Cradlesong.’ It was released under Atlantic Records. The collection’s lead song ‘Her Diamonds’ topped the Billboard Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks countdown. Penned by Thomas, this track was about his beloved wife and her illness. It won the hearts of both his fans as well as the critics. Other singles including ‘Mockingbird’ and ‘Someday’ also climbed high on the Adult Contemporary charts.
Live Performances
In a career spanning nearly two decades, the rock musician has given many hit live performances. In July 2005, he performed alongside the well-known music artist, Stevie Wonder, at the Live 8 concert in Philadelphia. He was also among the performers at the MTV Katrina Relief Concert. He has toured and sang along musicians like Toby Lightman and Jewel. One of his most loved performances was his recital of the single ‘Her Diamonds’ on the widely watched The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
Rob Thomas recently finished his live tour alongside Matchbox Twenty. The event was in support of the chart-topping album ‘North.’ Consisting of hits like ‘Overjoyed,’ ‘Our Song’ and ‘She’s So Mean,’ the record marks the band’s biggest success since 1996.
