From Steely Dan to Doobie Brothers
Michael McDonald was fascinated by the rock and soul of the 60s and pursued these two genres as his music career. During his high school, he performed with the band named Blue and recorded his own songs in the early 70s. In 1975, he played keyboard and provided backing vocals for various songs of the rock band, Steely Dan. Michael also joined the band in their several tours and made his place in the industry.
Michael McDonald rose to fame after he became a member of the popular band, The Doobie Brothers. By introducing jazz and soft rock to the group’s music, Michael deeply influenced the musical style of their albums. Together with the Doobies, he recorded some of the most successful songs of his career and earned widespread fame. Among these, It Keeps You Runnin’, Takin’ It to the Streets and What a Fool Believes are mention worthy.
Hit albums like Best of the Doobies, Livin’ on the Fault Line and Minute by Minute won him multiple Grammy Awards. These acclaimed records along with a number of tours placed the band among the most prolific music groups of the 70s.
Stardom with Solo Career
Michael McDonald’s solo career started with the release of his 1982 album, If That’s What it Takes. It peaked at sixth on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified as Gold. The following album, No Lookin’ Back came out in 1985 and heightened his solo career. Collaborating with James Ingram, he released a duet Yah Mo B There which won them a Grammy. In 1990, he released his third solo album, Take It to Heart that made its way to the music charts and included many hit singles.
Extending the limits of his musicianship, Michael came up with his successful album Motown in 2003. Reaching at 14 on the Billboard 200 chart, the album went Platinum within a short period after its release. Motown Two followed in 2004 and turned out to be another commercial success. It hit the music charts in the US and UK and was certified as Gold. His last studio record, Soul Speak was released in 2008 and charted at 12th on the Billboard 200. These hit albums made Michael a well reputed name in the music.
Recent Happenings
Michael McDonald recently collaborated with the musician Robben Ford and released his EP Unfinished Business. As part of his philanthropic works, he is doing live concerts to help the charity organization WhyHunger. He has also provided his talents to the bands such as Grizzly Bear and Holy Ghost! for their new records.
