Early Experiences and the Recording Deal
Martina McBride’s exposure of music came through her father who fronted a band named The Schiffters besides farming. She honed her vocal skills by singing for hours the songs of different musicians including Patsy Cline, Juice Newton and Reba McEntire. After years of experience with her father’s band and some other music groups, McBride could sing in different styles and genres. She married a studio engineer, John McBride in 1988 who worked with the sound crew of the country icon, Garth Brooks.
Garth Brooks heard McBride singing and was impressed by her precision and passion for music. He offered her to become his opening act and also helped her in recording her early demos. With the help of those early recordings, McBride secured a deal with RCA Nashville Records. In 1991 she began working on her first album.
