Early Career

Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, the artist developed an interest in theatre and acting while attending university. In order to pursue her new found interest she left her education and started performing locally at cafes and nightclubs. Later she moved to New York where her growing fame soon led to her performing on TV. She made her small screen debut on ‘The Garry Moore Show.’  Many more TV appearances followed, out of which her appearances on ‘Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In’ stand out the most. Her characters Ernestine and Edith Ann for the show won her a Golden Globe and an Emmy Award nomination. To date these remain the comedian’s most famous characters.

 

Rise to Stardom

That was just the start for Lily Tomlin and soon she was co-writing and appearing on several comedy specials. The rising artist’s name appeared on John Willis' Screen World in the list of ‘Promising New Actors of 1977.’ Her growing popularity also saw her making guest appearances on several shows. These include Frasier, And the Band Played On, Sesame Street and The X-Files.

Lily Tomlin also went on to appear on the big screen. She won National Society of Film Critics Award, BAFTA and New York Film Critics Circle Award for her role in the film ‘Nashville.’ She gained further fame for her role in the hit comedy 9 to 5.
