Time Magazine’s 2001 ‘Humorist of the Year’, David Sedaris has won millions of hearts with his comedic writings, radio shows and TV appearances. The highly sought after author and humorist has produced award winning material that has won critical as well as commercial acclaim. David has authored several New York Times Bestseller essay collections, selling over seven million copies worldwide. His fresh material revolving around education, jobs, his Greek heritage and his upbringing in the suburbs of Raleigh, keeps the audiences entertained throughout his live acts. Early Years
Born in Binghamton, David attended several colleges including Kent State University and the Western Carolina University before graduating from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1987. After graduation, David worked some odd jobs across New York City and Chicago. His fortunes turned when David was discovered while performing at a club in Chicago, by renowned radio host Ira Glass. Ira invited David on his weekly show, 'The Wild Room', where David read pages from his diary.
David’s performance on the show was widely appreciated by the fans as well as critics, earning him a spot on the National Public Radio in December 1992. On NPR, David read his essay titled 'SantaLand Diaries', on the show, 'Morning Edition'. Describing his experience during a Christmas as an elf at Macy’s Store, David’s 'SantaLand Dairies' was an instant hit amongst the fans. According to the New York Times, his success with the listeners made David a 'minor phenomenon'.
Major Works
David’s first ever story and essay collection, 'Barrel Fever' was released in 1994. After two more hit collections, 'Holiday on Ice' and 'Naked', he released his fourth essay collection, 'Me Talk Pretty One Day' in 2000. The essay garnered favorable reviews from the critics and won the 2001, 'Thurber Prize For American Humor'. Since then, David has produced five more essay collections including his most recent work, 'Let's Explore Diabetes With Owls', released in 2013. David has also worked on numerous articles for The New Yorker and Esquire.
