Early Ventures

Craig Ferguson began a career in entertainment as a drummer for various rock and punk bands in Scotland. In the early 80s, he became a regular member of the band named Dreamboys and performed in various shows and gigs. In 1986, Craig developed his identity as a comedian and performed in Edinburgh Festival Fringe. He gained popularity after that performance which led him to star in STV’s show, Red Dwarf.

Some of his other initial undertakings include 2000 Not Out, Dirt Detective and One Foot in the Grave. His first major assignment as a performer was The Ferguson Theory that was telecasted on BBC. He also found some success after performing in The Rocky Horror Show, a musical that was presented in London in 1991. His other theater credits include The Odd Couple, Coronation Street and Bad Boy Johnny and the Prophets of Doom.

Breakthrough in the US

Craig Ferguson’s career got a major break after he moved to Los Angeles and starred in the sitcom, Maybe This Time in 1995. Following this successful show, his famous role of Mr. Wick in the popular ABC’s sitcom, The Drew Carey Show made him known to the regular television viewers. He remained a part of the show from 1996 to 2003. His recurring appearances in the comedy special, A Wee Bit O’ Revolution strengthened his standing on the US television.

During his association with The Drew Carrey Show, Craig wrote and acted in three movies namely I’ll Be There, The Big Tease and Saving Grace. Besides acting, he directed ‘I’ll Be There’ in 2003 that won many awards at different film festivals. He also recorded his two comedy specials on the Comedy Central and toured throughout the US and Canada with his stand-up live shows.

Craig Ferguson earned immense commercial and critical success for his talk show, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. The show premiered in January 2005 on CBS and soon took the viewers by storm. Beating the past records of many home productions, the show became the channel’s most popular show. In 2006 Craig was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award.

Craig emerged as a strong writer after he wrote the acclaimed novel, Between the Bridge and the River in 2006. In 2009, he published his memoir titled American on Purpose that became one of the bestsellers. His frequent performances on the different stand-up shows include The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, The Daily Show and Late Show with David Letterman.

His versatility led him to do voice work in different animated series and movies. Among others, his voice works in Winnie the Pooh, How to Train Your Dragon, Brave and Big Top Scooby-Doo! were greatly admired. Craig has also released two comedy albums during his professional career.
