From Sonny & Cher to a Solo Icon

Getting her early exposure in music at the age of nine, Cher became interested in performing during her school years. In the early 60s, she met the singer Sony Bono and together they formed the duo Caesar & Cleo which they later renamed as Sonny & Cher. The twosome rose to fame with their hit single, I Got You Babe from their 1965 album, Look at Us. The album also commercially performed well and earned Gold certification in the US.

Throughout the 60s, Sonny & Cher gave multiple hit records and singles that maintained their reputation among the dominant groups such as the Beatles and Motown bands. With the start of the 70s the duo’s fame started to decline and Cher emerged as a successful solo singer and actress. Her 1971 album, Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves became her first studio record to earn Gold certification. Besides singing, her television specials like The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour and Cher listed her among highly rated celebrities. She also racked up various awards including a Golden Globe Award for her performance on the show.

Peak of Stardom

The period between late 70s and early 80s was mixed for Cher in terms of success as she added successful acting credits but her music career was overshadowed. Her fine fashion sense and distinctive image helped her to remain prominent on the national level. Successful films like Mask, Suspect and The Witches of Eastwick confirmed her success on the box office. In 1987, Cher came up with her self-titled record that hit the music charts in various countries and became her first record to go Platinum in the US. In 1988, she won an Oscar for the Best Actress for her role in the movie, Moonstruck.

Heart of Stone, released in 1989, became Cher’s first album to top the Australian music chart and it received multiple certifications. The 90s’ decade brought more commercial and critical acclaim as both her acting and music career thrived further. Chartbusting records such as Love Hurts, It’s a Man’s World and Believe enabled her to make her unique impression in the burgeoning pop era. She became known to introduce the auto tune, also known as the ‘Cher effect’ in some of her recordings. Her Do You Believe? Tour became one of the highest grossing tours of all time.

New Century, New Beginnings

Adaptability to the changing needs of the time helped Cher to capture the attention of the worldwide audiences. Her 2001 album, Living Proof received Gold and Platinum certifications in different countries. Catchy dance tunes and modern music elements of the album also won her many awards including a Billboard Music Award. Cher went on her Living Proof: The Farewell Tour and performed to millions of fans in twenty countries. The tour also won her a Primetime Emmy.

In 2008, Cher began her highly lucrative resident shows at the Colosseum in Caesars Palace. She returned to the movie scene with her 2010 musical, Burlesque with the singer Christina Aguilera. One of the songs sung by Cher in the musical won her a Golden Globe Award. 2013 marked a great revival in her music career as she released her latest studio record, Closer to the Truth nearly after 11 years. The album became her highest Billboard 200 hit to date.
