Her first organized musical effort was the song Ce n'etait qu'un reve, which she recorded with the help of brother. This tape was sent to the popular personal manager of that time, Rene Angelil, who would also become Dion's husband. Moved by her soulful voice, Angelil decided to make her a star.

In 1982, Dion garnered international attention by winning the Yamaha World Song Festival in Tokyo. She also became the first Canadian ever to have a Gold record. 1n 1988, she won the Eurovision Song Contest while representing Switzerland. This series of successful events established her as a superstar in her native as well as national music scene.

International Breakthrough

This streak of commercial and critical success was just the start of a remarkable career. After establishing her footing in French music, Dion added English to her repertoire and took the world by storm after releasing one after the other successful albums. Her very first English record, Unison, came out in 1990 and marked her international breakthrough with the hit single Where Does My Heart Beat Now.

Her fame doubled when she sang the official soundtrack of the Disney animated movie Beauty and the Beast. Besides earning her a Grammy and Oscar, the song also provided the basis for her next self-titled album that was released in 1992. Spawning hits like If You Asked Me To and Love Can Move Mountains, the album turned out to be a Multi-Platinum record in Canada and won her a number of Juno Awards.

In the coming years, she released many French and English albums including The Colour of My Love, Falling into You, D'eux, S'il suffisait d'aimer and Let's Talk About Love. Singles like The Power of Love, When I Fall in Love, Think Twice, Because You Loved Me and Je sais pas exposed her romantic side to the world and she also went on to rack up multiple awards. ‘Let's Talk About Love' included the classic hit My Heart Will Go On that became her signature song.

Reigning Pop Queen

Her career thrived throughout the 1990s and she became a visible and influential name on the international music landscape. Due to her family concerns, Dion went on a hiatus of three years and returned to music with the release of A New Day Has Come in 2002. Filled with personal references and songs such as Goodbye's (The Saddest Word) and I'm Alive, the album topped the Billboard 200 and was certified as Triple-Platinum in the US.

Later records like One Heart (2003), Miracle (2004) and Taking Chances (2007) opened new avenues of success for the diva.
